‘On a scale of 1 to 10, how weird are you?’ Believe it or not, this is one of the interview questions asked by Tony Hseih, CEO of Zappos. Or how about ‘What would you do in the event of a zombie apocalypse’? That one’s a favourite of Ashley Morris, CEO of Capriotti’s Sandwich Shop.
Today’s infographic from fivesquid shows that there really is a method to the madness. By asking questions like how weird you are on a scale of 1 to 10, Zappos aren’t necessarily looking to see just how batty you are (unless you answer 10, in which case you may be pushing it just a bit!); they’re ultimately looking to see how you justify your answer.
Some of the run-of-the-mill interview questions that we ask as recruiters aren’t exactly what you’d call innovative. Serious job seekers have done their research in terms of what questions to expect in interviews, and chances are, they’ve rehearsed the answers so well that they could rhyme them off in their sleep. Whereas these CEO’s have stepped outside of the box to actually get to know the candidate better, albeit through some slightly unconventional interview questions!
