Recruitment Bites: 5 Pieces of Recruiting News You Need to Hear - 24th February 2014

In the news this week:

Facebook buy WhatsApp

Facebook buy WhatsApp

WhatsApp co-founder Jan Koum became an overnight billionaire last Wednesday when Facebook bought his messaging service for the monstrous sum of £11 billion (the highest price ever paid for a tech startup). So just what is Mark Zuckerberg (Koum’s “long-time” friend) getting for his money? Well, he’s getting over 450 million active monthly users (209 million more than Twitter), messaging volume approaching the entire global telecom SMS volume, 600 million images uploaded daily, and 200 million voice message sent daily. So the mammoth deal, Koum said “Doing this will give WhatsApp the flexibility to grow and expand, while giving me, Brian [Acton], and the rest of our team more time to focus on building a communications service that’s as fast, affordable and personal as possible”.

LinkedIn open Influencer status to everyone

As of Wednesday last week, LinkedIn opened up their Influencer publishing platform to all of their members. Ryan Roslanky wrote on the LinkedIn blog: “When a member publishes a post on LinkedIn, their original content becomes part of their professional profile, is shared with their trusted network and has the ability to reach the largest group of professionals ever assembled.” LinkedIn have realised that “every professional has valuable experience to share“, not just the high profile Influencers like Ricahrd Branson and James Caan. There’s another argument for creating posting really great content on a daily basis if ever we heard one!

LinkedIn Recruiter Mobile

So what’s new in version 1.2? Well, the main improvements have been in search. Search filters now allow you to quickly refine your search with team activity and also now allow you to filter by location. Minor bugs have been identified and fixed and performance enhancements have been made in order to make the app run faster.

New SourceCon Q&A website

sourcecon.qa is brand new question and answer website for recruiters and sourcers to exchange ideas and ask questions of each other. New Email Tracking App: Streak

Gmail Streak

Want to know if and when that candidate opened your email? Then download Streak, the new Google Chrome and Safari app that notifies you when those you’ve emailed have read your message. Very handy for recruiters! Even handier is the fact that the sent email will not notify the recipient that their email is being tracked. Although Streak isn’t the first app of its kind, it is currently FREE and available to download now here. Check it out 🙂
