Top 10 Largest Direct Hiring Teams in the UK

A couple of weeks ago we checked out the Top 10 Largest Direct Hiring (in-house corporate) Teams in the United States using LinkedIn Advanced Search. This week we’re exploring compiling the Top 10 Largest Direct Hiring Team in the UK. As with the Top 10 US firms, we delved into their LinkedIn careers pages, their content, and the type of roles they recruit for, to give you an insight into how these guys became the biggest in the land:

1. Royal Bank of Scotland

The Royal Bank of Scotland has around 700 branches across Scotland, England and Wales, over 139,000 followers on LinkedIn, 41,200 employees on LinkedIn and holds the title for the UK’s largest direct hiring teams as it currently employs a team of 262 recruiters. Over 140,200 people choose to follow their LinkedIn company page.

Current hiring roles:
Audit directors, rainbow transition managers, senior product managers, product portfolio managers, management accountants and SAS programmers.

What’s on their Premium Careers Page?
Hero image posing the question “Where can we take you?”, brief synopsis of the global nature of the company as well as their mission statement, employer branding video promoting their RBS Group Jobs Channel on Youtube which comprises of employee videos, links to and calls to action for social sites and a quote from an employee.

Are live jobs being posted?
Yes. A wide variety of positions from software developers to accountants are being posted for a UK and US audience. Jobs are updated on a regular basis.

What type of content are they posting?
Job openings and links to careers events featuring RBS or graduate programmes also run by the firm.

2. Lloyds Banking Group

Lloyds Banking Group are a financial services group with more than 30 million customers in the UK and focus their business efforts towards retail and commercial financial services. Over 71, 500 people follow their Linked~In company page, 37,900 of their employees have a LinkedIn profile and 248 of them currently work as recruiters for the company. 71,900 followers keep an eye on their LinkedIn company page.

Current hiring roles:
Senior technical analysts, database administrators, digital proposition managers, legacy review managers, marketing managers, senior pricing analysts and C# web developers.

What’s on their Premium Careers Page?
Hero image followed by a very brief, yet copelling statement explaining why they “need the best people working at Lloyds Banking Group” in order to achieve their long-term company goals.

Are live jobs being posted?
Yes. Again a varied menu of positions are on offer here located across the Uk. Jobs are updated on a regular basis.

What type of content are they posting?
News articles concerning the bank, promotional/marketing efforts, awards and accolades they’ve won, employee/former employee achievements, charity partnerships and economic insights from their own website.

3. BBC

The British Broadcasting Corporation is a British public service broadcasting statuary corporation and happens to be the world’s leading public service broadcaster as well as the oldest. It also happens to be the largest broadcaster in the world by number of employees. The company employee about 23,000 staff (most of which are on LinkedIn, 21,366) and 193 of them are recruiters. 173,800 people currently follow their LinkedIn company and Careers pages.

Current hiring roles:
Head of user experience, digital marketing executives, junior engineers, software engineers, HR advisors, head of features and litigation lawyers.

What’s on their Premium Careers Page?
Hero image with the simple statement “We’re hiring!”, brief description of who the BBC are and what they do, an employer branding video outlining where the CEO feels the BBC is headed, and links to the company’s social media profiles, work experience programmes and careers website.

Are live jobs being posted?
Yes. Primarily media/marketing focused roles from around the UK and in New York City. Jobs are updated on a semi-regular basis.

What type of content are they posting?
Updates from their Careers website and graduate training programmes.

4. Barclays

Barclays is a British multinational banking and financial services company with a number of universal financial operations including retail, wholesale and investment banking, mortgage lending and credit cards. Those operations extend throughout 50 countries and 48 million customers. At the end of 2013, the bank employed 139,900 staff members (42,177 LinkedIn members) and 184 recruiters. Over 174,800 people follow their LinkedIn company page.

Current hiring roles:
Enterprise bankers, product managers, control and risk analysts, operations team managers, data integration engineers, developers, analytics managers and digital marketing leads.

Yes. A number of roles are posted everyday across a host of international countries.

What type of content are they posting?
Economic news, original blog articles and financial news.

5. Accenture

Accenture are a multinational management consulting, technology services and outsourcing company with approximately 275,000 employees (157 of them are employed as recruiters in the UK, while 206,700 of them are LinkedIn members). The company have also attracted over 1.2 million followers on LinkedIn – the most amount of followers of the any company in the top 10.

Current hiring roles:
Research assistants, content executives, Murex developers, InfoPath developers, business process analysts and .Net developers.

What’s on their Premium Careers Page?
An introduction to the company and what they do, an employer branding video that aims to help potential employees with the application process by showing them how to develop their personal brand, and links to the company’s social sites, careers site and a special careers mailing list.

Are live jobs being posted?
Yes. Global finance and developer roles are posted on a daily basis.

What type of content are they posting?
Economic news, original blog articles and financial news.

6. BP

Formally known as British Petroleum, BP are a British multinational oil and gas company and is the 6th largest energy company by market capitalisation and the 5th largest company in the world. They were also voted one of LinkedIn’s most in demand employers of 2013. 85,700 people are currently employed by the firm and in the UK, 149 of them are recruiting staff. Almost 600,000 people follow their LinkedIn company page.

Current hiring roles:
Digital security business analysts, HR analysts, facility engineers, rig engineers, production technicians, mechanical engineers, inspectors and brand managers.

What’s on their Premium Careers Page?
The focus of BP’s careers page is employee development and how BP can help employees get the most out of themselves, their opening statement reflects this, two employer branding videos explaining who the company are and telling employee stories, and quotes from two BP employees on their experience working for BP.

Are live jobs being posted?
Yes. A plethora of mainly engineering roles are uploaded to LinkedIn on a daily basis and all job openings span a variety of countries.

What type of content are they posting?
Quarterly results, specific economy observations, industry outlooks, careers updates and news from the oil and gas industry.

7. Tesco PLC

Tesco is a British multinational grocery and general merchandise retailer, the 2nd largest retailer in the world after Wal-Mart in the US. It’s stores can be found in 12 countries across 3 continents. Worldwide the firm employees over 537,700 people (34,607 use LinkedIn) and in the UK, 149 of them are recruiters. Their company page has 97,000 followers.

Current hiring roles:
Digital web designers, web coders, android and iOS developers, insight analysts, merchandisers, buyers and project managers.

What’s on their Premium Careers Page?
Brief introductory paragraph to what potential employees can expect from Tesco as an employer, links to their careers website and blog, quotes from Tesco employees expressing why they enjoy working for Tesco, and an excellent employer branding video documenting Tesco’s history since 1919.

Are live jobs being posted?
Yes. Global roles, primarily software/development related roles, are posted on a regular basis.

What type of content are they posting?
FMCG news and trends, and original and promotional blog articles including recipes and special offers.

8. EY (Ernst & Young)

EY is the 3rd largest professional services firm in the world and is one of the so-called “Big Four” accounting firms along with PriceWaterhouseCooper, KPMG and Deloitte. 175,000 employees (141,270 of which are on LinkedIn) are placed in over 700 offices in more than 150 countries, and there are currently 113 recruiters working in the UK. Currently 711,600 people follow their LinkedIn company page.

Current hiring roles:
Advisory professionals, team leaders, account managers, incident & problem managers, performance improvement managers and OSS specialists.

What’s on their Premium Careers Page?
This very strongly branded and comprehensive careers page begins with a pat on the back to potential employees, congratulating them on all that they’ve done to improve their ‘hire-ablity’ and stating how EY can take them take the next step in their career, a short, empowering and employee focused employer branding video, quotes from two of EY’s managing partners, links to EY’s careers microsite and social sites, and a longer second employer branding video that focuses on the work and culture of EY in the UK.

Are live jobs being posted?
Yes. A large variety roles in a variety of different languages are posted every day.

What type of content are they posting?
Market forecasts, trend reports and third party blog articles.

9. HSBC

HSBC is a multinational banking and financial services company and one of the world’s largest banks. Although the banks origins lie in Hong Kong and Shanghai, the company refers to both the UK and Hong Kong as it’s “home markets”. 284,180 (92,758 are on LinkedIn) staff members service 89 million customers across 85 countries on a daily basis and 110 recruiters look after hiring operations in the UK. 388,559 people follow their LinkedIn company page.

Current hiring roles:
Software testing engineers, client services professionals, senior project managers, mortgage specialists, fraud investigation & recovery specialists, assistant managers and relationship managers.

What’s on their Premium Careers Page?
Links to the company’s corporate website and a promotional video for a BBC News series the company sponsor.

Are live jobs being posted?
Yes. Specific global, financial roles such as investment counsellors and change portfolio managers, are regularly posted.

What type of content are they posting?
News stories from their HSBC NOW blog.

10. GlaxoSmithKline

GSK are a British multinational pharmaceutical, biologics, vaccines and consumer healthcare company (the only one on our list), and the world’s 4th largest after Pfizer, Novartis and Sanofi. Over 99,000 employees are employed by the company (64,620 are on LinkedIn) and 109 recruiters are employed within the UK. Almost 391,000 people follow their LinkedIn page.

Current hiring roles:
Senior brand managers, regional category managers, mechanical engineers, quality and risk managers, contract managers, sales professionals and digital marketing associates.

What’s on their Premium Careers Page?
An employer branding video documenting an employee’s exciting journey from graduate to CEO of GSK, and links to the firm’s various social channels.

Are live jobs being posted?
Yes. Medical, sales, marketing and engineering roles aplenty, posted on a weekly basis.

What type of content are they posting?
Industry relevant infographics, news stories of industry interest, original blog articles, and conference promotions.
