The State
of Hiring 2026.

The year the AI stragglers get left behind.

TA headcount is down. Tech budgets are up. AI is everywhere — and almost nowhere near the hiring decision itself. We surveyed 103 senior TA leaders across North America, EMEA, and APAC to map where hiring actually is in 2026, and where it has to go next.

The setup

The Efficiency Era is over.

For three years the question was "how do we do more with less?" Job descriptions got drafted faster. Outreach got blasted further. Schedulers replaced inboxes. The activity layer of hiring is now largely automated — and the gains from that layer are largely captured.

The 2026 data points somewhere else entirely. Tech budgets are commanding three times the mindshare of any other TA investment. Enterprise leaders are not asking for more speed. They're asking for evidence. They're asking for fairness. They're asking for a way to make the next hire the right one — the first time.

Stand-out findings

The numbers that defined 2026.

Proof points

Two charts from inside the report.

The averages tell one story. The splits — by company size, by region — tell the one that actually matters for your 2026 plan.

Chart 03.1 · Governance

No audit trail of interviews, by company size.

Share of TA orgs that can't reconstruct what was asked, by whom, in a live interview. % saying "no" or "informal notes only".

SMB under 500 FTE 71%
Mid-market 501–5,000 66%
Mid-large 5,001–10,000 58%
Enterprise 10,000+ 49%

The gap closes with size — but never closes. Even at 10k+ FTE, nearly half of TA leaders can't tell you what was said in last week's interviews.

Chart 04.2 · Strategy

How regions are spending their AI budget.

"Is your 2026 AI investment going toward doing the same work faster, or toward making better hiring decisions?"

North America n = 51 Quality-led · +16 pts
42% Efficiency
58% Decision quality
EMEA n = 38 Efficiency-led · +24 pts
62% Efficiency
38% Decision quality
More of the same, faster Elevate the decision

Two regions, two playbooks. NA leaders are spending on outcomes; EMEA is still buying speed. The full report breaks both out by maturity band.

What's inside

Three parts. One clear thread.

The work around the hiring decision has been automated. The decision itself hasn't. Here's what that means for your 2026 plan.

Part 01

Fewer people. Higher stakes.

54% of enterprise TA teams report headcount cuts. 78% of organisations held or grew their tech budget. When fewer people are making more hiring decisions, the quality of each decision becomes the competitive variable.

Part 02

AI has reached the administrative layer.

89% of TA leaders are using LLMs. Most of it is Shadow AI — unsanctioned, ungoverned, and increasingly close to your candidate data. We break down where governance is keeping up, where it isn't, and what's at stake when it doesn't.

Part 03

The last unverified decision point.

The top of your funnel is automated. Your candidates are AI-augmented. The live interview is now the single most consequential — and most exposed — moment in your hiring process. We show what 62% are missing, and what the leaders pulling ahead are doing.

What you'll walk away with

Three reads, one decision framework.

  1. 01

A benchmark for where your hiring stack sits against peers — by region, by company size, by AI maturity.

  2. 02

The four structural blockers stopping 82% of enterprise teams from deploying Interview Intelligence — and how the leaders pulling ahead are clearing them.

  3. 03

A clear read on the strategic fork in 2026: are you using AI to do more of the same, faster — or to elevate what TA actually does?
